Bath maintenance on flow-through pre-treatment

 Pretreatment

Bath maintenance in continuous pretreatment systems for degreasing and phosphating. By using centrifugal separators, phosphate sludge and tramp oils are continuously removed, significantly extending bath life.

Bath Maintenance in Continuous Pretreatment Systems

In pretreatment systems for metal surfaces, components are degreased and phosphated before subsequent coating processes. During production, contaminants such as phosphate sludge, metal particles, and tramp oils continuously enter the process bath.

In continuous spray systems, large volumes of process fluid are circulated. To ensure consistently high surface quality and stable process conditions, continuous cleaning of the bath fluid is essential.

Problem

During operation, the contamination of the process bath steadily increases. This is mainly caused by tramp oils carried into the system and the formation of phosphate sludge during the chemical process.

Without proper bath maintenance, this leads to:

  • High accumulation of phosphate sludge
  • Contamination by tramp oils
  • Deposits in tanks, pipelines, and spray nozzles
  • Increased maintenance and cleaning effort
  • Frequent bath replacement with high disposal and operating costs

In the system considered, baths had to be completely replaced after only a few weeks without additional treatment.

Solution

A treatment system with multiple centrifugal separators was installed for continuous bath maintenance. The separators are connected in bypass to the pretreatment tanks and clean the process fluid during operation.

High centrifugal forces ensure reliable removal of even the finest particles. At the same time, tramp oils are separated from the bath. The solids are discharged as compact phosphate sludge, while the cleaned fluid is returned to the system.

Advantages of Bath Maintenance

  • Significant extension of bath service life
  • Continuous removal of phosphate sludge and oils
  • Reduced deposits in spray systems and pipelines
  • Lower maintenance and cleaning effort
  • Reduced disposal and chemical costs

Continuous cleaning stabilizes the entire pretreatment process and significantly improves overall efficiency.
