Emulsion Fine Filtration at BMW Landshut

In the machining of engine and transmission components, extremely fine metal particles and tool wear are generated during cutting operations. These contaminants enter the coolant emulsion and lead to increasing contamination of the entire process circuit.

At the BMW plant in Landshut, high demands are placed on process reliability and machining quality. Continuous fine filtration of the emulsion is therefore essential to ensure stable production conditions and consistent component quality.

Problem

During machining, fine solid particles continuously enter the coolant emulsion. Over time, these particles accumulate in the system and can lead to:

  • Deterioration of machining quality
  • Increased tool wear
  • Deposits in tanks, pipelines, and machines
  • Reduced service life of the emulsion
  • Rising maintenance and disposal costs

Conventional filtration systems often reach their limits when dealing with very fine particles or require high maintenance effort.

Solution

A centrifugal separator was installed for continuous fine filtration of the coolant emulsion. The contaminated medium is extracted from the process circuit and fed into the separator.

Inside the separator, high centrifugal forces act on the fluid, enabling reliable separation of even the finest particles. Modern separators achieve accelerations of up to approx. 2,000 times gravity and can efficiently remove particles in the micrometer range.

The separated solids are discharged as compact sludge, while the cleaned emulsion is returned to the production process.

Advantages of Emulsion Fine Filtration

  • Continuously clean emulsion
  • Stable machining processes
  • Reduced tool wear
  • Extended service life of the process fluid
  • Reduced maintenance effort
  • Lower disposal and operating costs

Continuous fine filtration stabilizes the entire production process and significantly improves manufacturing efficiency.
