Paint Sludge Removal at the Coating Line at Reum Hardheim

In industrial coating processes, paint residues and overspray are continuously generated. These particles enter the circulating water system of the coating line and gradually form what is known as paint sludge.

At the coating line of Reum in Hardheim, the increasing contamination of the circulating water led to a growing load on the entire process system. To ensure consistent coating quality and reliable operation, continuous removal of the paint sludge was required.

Problem

During the coating process, paint particles and overspray continuously enter the circulating water. Without proper treatment, this can lead to:

• Increasing formation of paint sludge in the water
• Deposits in tanks, pipelines, and pumps
• Impairment of coating quality
• Increased maintenance and cleaning effort
• Frequent system downtime

In addition, disposal and operating costs increase if contaminated water must be regularly replaced or intensively treated.

Solution

A centrifugal separator was installed for continuous removal of paint sludge. The contaminated circulating water is fed into the separator, where paint particles are reliably separated by high centrifugal forces.

The particles are collected and discharged as compact sludge, while the cleaned water is returned to the coating system. Due to the high centrifugal acceleration, even very fine particles can be efficiently removed.

This ensures consistently clean process water and stable operation of the coating process.
